Anyone is welcome to submit notes, though revisions may be requested. You will be credited via initials at the bottom of the note and a biographical line elsewhere on the site (see Contributors). Please submit notes to John Hunt (firstname.lastname@example.org), and model your drafts on the house style represented in the notes already published. Elements of that style can be summarized as follows:
- Notes should gloss textual passages of no more than a few sentences. General observations about the book are useful only in the service of shedding light on particular passages.
- Boldface quotations from the passage or passages being glossed will help users see how the note illuminates the text, and save them from having to go back and forth between note and text.
- Begin with a paragraph presenting the information most essential for a first-time reader. Subsequent paragraphs can explore further implications of the passage, reference related passages, consider alternative interpretations, and summarize relevant scholarship.
- Although information and interpretation can never be entirely separated, try to present more objective information first and more subjective interpretation later.
- Hyperlinks can take users to other notes that contain related material and, occasionally, to sites outside the Joyce Project.
- When notes will be accessed from multiple links, it should be written so as to make good sense when accessed from different locations.
- Notes can be overwhelmed by the citation of sources of commonly available information, but important scholarly discoveries should be acknowledged. Cite judiciously.
- Move from point to point as logically as possible. Avoid merely associative thinking and merely possible connections.
- Avoid finality. Open-ended inquiry and inclusion of contrary viewpoints are desirable.
- All notes will be accompanied by visual images, audio recordings, and/or video. Suggestions for these materials are welcome.
