The evangelist John Alexander Dowie styled himself a reincarnation of the prophet Elijah, but when Elijah speaks in Circe he seems to be based not only on Dowie but also on another American evangelist, Thomas Jefferson Shelton. Shelton preached that he was Jesus Christ, and he sold the gullible on "vibrations" that would punch their ticket to heaven: "Are you all in this vibration? I say you are. You once nobble that, congregation, and a buck joyride to heaven becomes a back number.... It is immense, supersumptuous. It restores. It vibrates. I know and I am some vibrator."
